Evening at Horseshoe Bay



Last night Roger (http://www.rogernordstromphoto.blogspot.com/) and I went down to Horseshoe Bay to shoot the sunset. I've been trying to show him some new areas along the lake that he hasn't seen yet. Horseshoe Bay can be a fun place to shoot, depending on the conditions. This evening when we were there the lake was smooth as glass, which is always nice to have when making images of the lake. At the entrance to the bay there is this nice, photogenic pile of rocks that I had fun shooting. I used my graduated neutral-density filters on the image above and the one below to help balance the exposure between the dark foreground and the brighter sky. Using the filters also helped bring out the detail in the underwater rocks in the foreground.

Mackinac Island~The Island

Today we drove up to visit Mackinac Island. I have wanted to visit here for years so I was very excited to be finally doing this trip! The weather was just perfect and the island was just gorgeous. This is definitely one of my favorite things we have done so far! We had a great day and lots of fun together.



Mackinac Island is an island covering 3.8square miles in land area, part of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The island was home to a Native American settlement before European exploration began in the 17th century. It served a strategic position amidst the commerce of the Great Lakes fur trade. This led to the establishment of Fort Mackinac on the island by the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the scene of two battles during the War of 1812.



In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony. Much of the island has undergone extensive historical preservation and restoration; as a result, the entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is well known for its numerous cultural events; its wide variety of architectural styles, including the famous Victorian Grand Hotel; its fudge; and its ban on almost all motor vehicles. More than 80percent of the island is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park.

Mt. Rainier, Kautz Glacier


After climbing the easiest routes on Rainier, we wanted to climb something a little more challenging. So we decided to try the Kautz Glacier.

We crossed the Nisqually Glacier, then we went up a gully called "The Fan." It is full of rocks that break loose each day as it warms up.




We headed up the Wilson Glacier and found a great camp site just below the Turtle Snowfield. The rock wall would serve as a windbreak and there was running water close at hand. Unlike Camp Muir, we did not have 99 people camping right beside us. Mt. Adams in the background.

The main challenge of the Kautz Glacier route is a short section of 45 degree ice.

Here are 3 tired and hungry climbers just a couple of hours from the car and some real food. Jonathan was able to summit an intermediate route for his first attempt on Rainier! It was fun to climb something new and challenging in this awesome part of creation.

Gilman Bridge

these are views from the Gilman Bridge just off the main road going to Jemez Springs. Gilman is an even smaller village. The Jemez Creek flows under the bridge. We stopped to see how well the water was flowing in this time of drought and found it doing ok on this day. I expect it will be really down in a few weeks if we don't get some rain. This water is probably the last of the spring snow melt water.

Rock in Road


I'm not sure why there were barrels around this rock that was almost in the road. Could have been just to causion drivers. But it looked as if the rock had slipped more toward the road or maybe the road crew was afraid that it might slip some more. We have seen lots of rocks in the road on this trip and others but never any this big.

Coco the Obedient One...Sort of....

Anyone who know Auburn and Ace, knows how well trained Ace is. Coco, on the other hand, not so much. Don't get me wrong. She is a great dog. We don't have any trouble with her. It's just comical to us to see her version of dog obedience after being around Auburn and Ace.



Here she is walking with Aric. I love this picture of the two of them. She seems fully engrossed into listening to him. She seems to be saying, I am your dog. You are my boy.

You are Master. I am dog. Lie down....no problem!

I'll just stay here. With you. Until you let me know when I can get up. Or until.....

Unraveling a little mystery.

The Clues.

A photograph, with the words "Detroit Cousins" written on the back. The photograph was one that my aunt Phyllis had loaned to me for scanning a few years ago. When I asked her who the "Detroit Cousins" were she could only give me one first name, Mercedes. She said she remembers them visiting when she was young. (Photo at bottom of post.)

Franklin and Emily Robison Bair were married in 1861 and had five children, one was a daughter whose name was given as Laura Lemmon in Franklin's obituary of 1917. It also stated that she was of Detroit. Emily had died about 1877 and none of the children are listed with Franklin in the 1880 census.

The vague recollection that one of my ancestors "took in" a child to raise. I did a search of notes in my genealogy database for "Bair" and it didn't take long to find what I was looking for.

The Records.

The will of my 3rd great grandfather, William Hamilton Dunfee, bequeaths "the sum of Fifty Dollars" to "Flora C. Bair to be due and payable to her when she attains the age of twenty one years." And, the obituary for his wife, Catharine (Jones) Dunfee, dated February 25, 1903 lists as one of her survivors "Mrs. M. C. Leaman, who was from infancy cared for in the home of Mrs. Dunfee, and loved as her own."

I went back and checked the obituary notices for the children of William and Catherine Dunfee to see if I had overlooked anything. The obituary for Henrietta Rebecca Dunfee of September 27, 1941 published in the Columbia City Post, stated that "She is survived by one brother, William Dunfee of Columbia township, and a foster sister, Mrs. Jack Hampton of Detroit." No mention was made of surviving sisters in the 1942 obituary of Henrietta's brother, William James Dunfee.

Is Laura Lemmon actually Flora Leaman?

The 1880 Indiana census lists the family of Wm H. Dunfee (on page 423) in Columbia Township, Whitley County.

Catharine, 52, wife, born Ohio, father born Virginia, mother born Pennsylvania
Rebecca, 28, daughter, at home, born Indiana

Flora Cathy, 8, daughter, at school, born Indiana
[The 3rd child of Wm. and Catherine was Sophia, who had married William P. Wise in 1873. They are my 2nd great grandparents.]

Whitley County Marriage Records (Book 6 page 6) show that Flora C. Bair was married to Massilon C. Leamon on October 4, 1898. The Marriage Applications Book 1893-1901 gives his first name as Masilon. Her given name is Florence C. It doesn't list her father's name but her mother's maiden name is Robinson.

There is a Guardianship Packet for Emily Bair in the Whitley County Archives. I've contacted the county archivist to try and set a date to look at the record since the last three times I've stopped by, during the posted hours, she hasn't been there!

Transcribed death records show that "Infant Male Layman died December 5, 1899 age 1 1/2 days. Parents were Malsea Layman and Cora Bair." I haven't seen the record so can't determine whether Cora is really Lora, or not.

The 1900 census for Whitley County shows the Leaman family residing on Ellsworth Street in Columbia City (page 53a).

In 1910, I found the family in Fostoria, Seneca County, Ohio (page 28/5a)

Flora, wife, 36, married once 12 years, 1 child 1 living, born Indiana, parents born Indiana
Mercedes, daughter, 15, born Indiana

I didn't find M. C. and Flora Leaman in the ancestry census index for 1920 or 1930 in Ohio or Michigan. Thinking perhaps Flora had married Jack Hampton before 1920 I searched for Flora Hampton. One hit in 1930 only: George H. Hampton and wife Flora in Clinton, Macomb County, Michigan. She is 54, married 22 years, born in Michigan. Not the right Flora.

I'm not sure why, but I then did a search of the 1930 census for Mercedes Hampton, born in 1894, living in Michigan. Up came this family, living in Detroit District 30, Wayne County (page 36):
Robert Hampton, head of household, rents home for $60, 53, first married at age 23, born Canada-Eng, parents born Canada-Eng, Steel worker, Auto Company
Katherine, wife, 54, first married at age 17, born Indiana, father born Pennsylvania, mother born Ohio
Mercedes Wilkinson, daughter, 35, divorced, first married at age 17, born Indiana, parents born Indiana, Saleslady, Ladies Clothes

According to the 1880 census (see above), Flora's middle name was Cathy. So, is it a stretch to think this might be the right household? Of course, the husband's name is Robert and not Jack. But maybe he was called Jack by family members? Katherine is the right age, she and her parents were born in the right places. Same for Mercedes. Note that Mercedes is listed as Robert's daughter but he was born in Canada and her parents were born in Indiana.

I did not find Mercedes Wilkinson in the 1920 census index but did find the Robert Hampton household living on Oakland Street, Detroit Ward 3, District 111, Wayne County (p42/2a)
Robert Hampton, head of household, 40, married, immigrated 1911, alien or naturalized has "Pa" in column, born Canada, parents born Canada, Moulder, Auto Factory
Katherine, wife, 40, married, immigrated has X in column, alien or naturalized has "al" in column, born Indiana, parents born Indiana

I searched the SSDI for Mercedes Wilkinson, but got no hits. Then searched it for Mercedes (first name only), born in 1894, card issued in Michigan.

I got two hits. One for Mercedes Ginther, born December 6, 1894, died Sep 1978. The other was for Mercedes Hernandez, born February 2, 1894, died Feb 1983. I found them in the 1930 census and based on the fact that both are married in 1930 and their place of birth (Mrs. Ginther was born in Michigan and Mrs. Hernandez was born in Mexico) neither one is the "right" person.

Conclusions.

Laura Lemmon, named in her father's obituary, is the same Flora Cathy Bair who was "adopted" by William H. and Catherine Dunfee, and she is the same Flora/Florence who married Massilon C. Leamon/Leaman.

Using her middle name Katherine, Flora married a second time to Robert Hampton, aka Jack Hampton. They lived in Detroit, Michigan.

Flora Katherine Hampton was still living in September 1941 but, since she is not mentioned in the obituary of William James Dunfee, she may have died prior to May 1942 (or whomever provided his family information didn't include her, for whatever reason).

Flora and M. C. Leaman had a daughter named Mercedes, who could be the Detroit cousin known as Mercedes. Mercedes married Mr. Wilkinson at age 17 and divorced before 1930, when she was living with her mother and step-father.

As Randy pointed out in his comment, I have no "real" documentation for many of my facts and conclusions. He suggests checking the online Michigan death index as well as Detroit city directories. Thanks, Randy, and I will follow up on those suggestions.

I should have stated in the original post that my conclusions are preliminary and are based on the information that I have gathered thus far. Additional research is definitely needed to "prove" those presumptions.

Questions.

Of course, as more information is uncovered, additional questions arise. What happened to Mercedes? Did she marry again? Did she have any children? When and where did she die? When and where did Flora Katherine die? Was Robert really called Jack?


Photograph identified only as "Detroit Cousins." My aunt said the ladies' name was Mercedes.

Mae Dunfee was the adopted daughter of William James Dunfee and his wife Mary Elizabeth Walker. Hazlette is my grandmother; Jane and Bill are her sister and brother. I think the lady in the middle is Mercedes who would have been about 8 years older than my grandmother who was born in January 1902. I'm not sure that the boy is grandma's brother Bill. He was only 3 years younger than she and, to me, this boy looks younger than that. I'm guessing that this picture was taken about 1920, give or take a few years.

Everybody Loves a Lovely Bicycle

Sometimes, between trying to squeeze in 30-mile rides, obsessing about components and taking close-ups for product reviews, I forget the big picture: Beautiful bicycles can lift our spirits.



These two ladies areIsha Ware and Caroline Robinson, from the neighborhood, and they reminded me of why I like bicycles in the first place.



Today I fitted my bikeMarianne with a very funky new set of dressguards (from Simeli) and dragged her outside to photograph. On three separate occasions, women walking down the street stopped to ask me about the bicycle. They were clearly happy to see such a bike - eccentric and undeniably "girly", with a colourful "thingie" on the wheel, flowers on the handlebars, and a shiny bell. Isha (pictured above) was wearing an outfit that was the exact same colour as Marianne's frame, and so naturally this had to be documented.



One young woman (not pictured here) told me that she wanted to buy a bicycle, but found bike shops to be male-oriented and intimidating. I remember lots of stories like this from 1-2 years ago, but I thought that things were a lot better now. Apparently they are not completely better; at least not yet. One of my main goals for Lovely Bicycle, is that ladies who have been disappointed or intimidated by bike shops can find the information they are looking for here.



A nice bicycle can make even people who are not into bicycles at all - just people who are passing by - smile and want to pet it. The very form of a nicely designed bicycle is welcoming; the texture of its components inviting. Maybe it's a "woman thing". Or maybe it's universal. But it sure is nice. Lovely bicycles for all!

Most already know how good the Broad Peak is. Great ski on hard snow and ice. Light weight and easy to carry. I've skied them a lot of places and in every snow condition I can imagine. It is better on hard snow obviously than in knee deep powder. But the BP will ski anything you are capable of skiing is my take on it. The steepest skiing and the longest tours I have done were allon my pair of Broad Peaks.



But one too many ridesover the handle bars on the Broad Peak in deep soft snow made me think that a little more modern and widerski design, if I could keep the weight down, might be a worthy investment.

I need to pause here for just a moment. I've been getting lazy and have not kept up on reviews of the gear I am using this winter and spring. I mentioned this ski toBrian over at :

So hesoonhad a pair in his capable hands as well.Brian skis more in a week than I likely do in a season. The only race where I willbeat Brianis to this review and the comparison of these two skis. We are both getting a chance to ski on the newest Dynafit Nanga Parbat and Cho Oyu shortly. So more to come on technical skis like the twodescribed here. Be sure to watch Brian's blog in the near future for his reviews of all these ski.



Back to the comparison/review.



The GTR has a very modern, slightly rockered tip, good camber under foot and I think most importantly a little more width than the Broad Peak. While it will float a tiny bit better and makes manky snow a little easier to ski, the down side is it is a little softer under footand not as good on really hard surfaces IMO. But so far in really poor snow conditions this has be a workman like ski. Which means I have nothing bad to say about it. That may not mean a lot but the conditions I have skied to date with the GTR have been dismal. More side stepping and kick turns than I care to recount. Nice that the ski will turn once you have he opportunity to get it done.



My customcut narrow skins used on the GTR weigh in at exactly what my BP skis do. But the Broad Peak factory Speed Skin is full coverage. Both climb well. Edge to the Broad Peak there.



To be honest I had thought my entire package of either ski and skin was closer than the 6oz on the scale shows. 6 oz means so little on a full day tour. It is less than a full cup of water.

The question remains..."which ski do you think is better?"



The first comment I think needs addressing is, I don't think either of these skis is a quiver skis. Bare with me for a moment on my reasoning here.



Skimo or "Edged Alpinism" gear?



I do have a quiver of skis. I also have a "quiver" of ice tools. But in actuality I don't have as big of quiver of either as one might first think.



For technical tools these days I have Nomics.One technical tool that serves many different types of terrain. Of course I have other axes/tools. But one technical tool that I use.



Same with skis pretty much. I have one ski that I consider a really technical tool. That is the Broad Peak. And now the recent purchase of the GTRmakeit two.



Either ski could easily replace the other IMO. But *THE* technical ski is one I will not easily be without. If you practice"Edged Alpinism" I'd suspect you have a ski that is similar to one of these two TOOLS. Two is not much of a quiver.



A fewof the best SkiMo or "Edged Alpinism" web sites? At some point it isn't "just" skiing any more.

If I dared ski some of the stuff shown on these web sites, I would pull outa technical tool. That would beone or another ski of this typethat I own at the moment. Both of these skis are good tools. But I don't look at them as ski as much as I look at them as just another piece of alpine climbing kit. Just as I view an axe or crampon or a harness, these aresimply tools.



I think part of this selection of gear is matching boots to skis. Obviously I am using the lightest binding I can get to save weight. I and others trust these lwt bindings every where in and out of the "no fall zone". They are a given now for "edged alpinism".



I use both the TLT5 Performance and the Mtn version of the same boot. But there are other, lighter,high performance boots in several versions including those from Scarpa. You can save a tiny bit of weight by ditching the tongue and power strap on the TLT and even more by using a lighter, full on (exensive) race boot with little loss of performance on these technical skis. The original Palau liner of the Performance or the Intuition Pro Tour Liner will save some weight as well in the TLT.



I really like the more progressive flex of the TLT Mountain compared to the carbon cuffed TLT Performance. Something to thing about if you are looking for new LWT boots.



My point is you don't need mondo ski and boots for this kind of stuff. And a poor selection of heavy gear and the wrong clothing choices will drastically cut your likelihood of success on many projects.



It is easy to say, "boots" are your most important piece of gear." And they might well be. But it is the system of technical ski, lwt boot and race bindings that really make this system so efficient and a joy to use in the mountains. Doesn't matter if you are doing "edged alpinism" of skiing some super fun, summer snow field with your dog.



As an example of a "heavier" but very similar system my 177cm Huascaran (113mm @ the boot) and a slightly heavier "race" Dynafirt Speed Superlight bindingweights in at 8# 12oz for the pair and another 5oz for their skis.A full three more pounds of the pair of ski, binding and skins. That is a lot of extra weight on a skin track.



These light technical skis are both stellar skis to get it done on. At the moment I am swayed by the slightly wider GTR for my fun. And the tiny bit more lift and ease on the turns that the width and rocker brings. But I have the BP in the back of my mind every time I have to ski orside slip through a nasty patch of ice and wonder if the BP might have well allowed me a little more security there.



TRAB, Atomic, Elan, Haganand a host of other rando and rando race skis brandsare out there. Check out the other blogs if this kind of ski interests you. See if you can mate up your own system for best effect. I have little interest in true rando race skis. But one or two steps up from the 65mm under foot race ski does interst me.
